Straight answers
▸Who has to file Form 2290?
The owner of any highway vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. The tax year runs July 1 to June 30, and for trucks running in July the filing is due August 31.
▸How much is the 2290 tax?
It starts at $100 for a 55,000-pound vehicle and rises $22 per extra 1,000 pounds, capping at $550 for 75,000 pounds and up. Logging vehicles pay 75% of the standard rate. Drive under 5,000 miles a year (7,500 agricultural) and the tax is suspended — but you still file.
▸What's the Schedule 1 and why does it matter?
It's the IRS-stamped proof your 2290 was filed. Your state won't issue or renew apportioned (IRP) plates without it — which is why getting it back fast matters more than the filing itself.
▸Why does the IRS reject brand-new companies' 2290s?
The e-file system checks your EIN against IRS records, and new EINs take about two weeks to propagate. If your LLC is days old, your 2290 will bounce until the EIN is in the system — plan plates around it.
